UPDATED: One year ago today we sat in silence as we witnessed Derek Chauvin claim the life of George Floyd with a knee to the neck. "I can't breathe" echoed through the streets from state to state and voice to voice of every black life that mattered as we experienced yet another traumatic death in our community. How can we strip the norm of the taunting reminder that black lives don't matter?
The Power lies with dismantling systems and structures and attacking the power systems aiding in White Supremacy. Although we can never bring back the lives of our brothers and sisters, we can SHIFT our focus and show the world exactly how much we DO matter.
WHY BUY BLACK YORK COUNTY?
African-American buying power surpassed $1 trillion in 2016 and is expected to reach $1.5 trillion this year in 2021, according to the University of Georgia. That makes Black Americans the largest racial consumer market.
In the last decade, there have been more successful Black brands, Black-owned businesses, and investment in expanded economic opportunities for African Americans. African Americans are nearly three times as likely to take to social media to show support of their favorite companies and brands.
African Americans are now 58% more likely to expect the brands they buy to take a stance on issues and 37% more likely to buy a brand when they do.
